HORSE RESCUE DRAMA ENDS HAPPILY

The impending rescue by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation (EHCRC) of fourteen horses from what was described as a “living hell” in Callosa De Segura took a dramatic turn last Thursday.

Working with El Refugio del Burrito, a donkey rescues sanctuary from Malaga, the EHCRC received a call late on Thursday afternoon which would see these unfortunate equines taken from the premises where they were kept in appalling conditions.

Sue Weeding, co founder of the EHCRC explains what happened.
“This tragic case has received much publicity in both the English speaking and Spanish press over the past few weeks. We were told to expect the result of the court investigation to happen at the end of March. I received a telephone call to inform me that the judge had rushed the case through the court as a matter of urgency. I was asked to attend Orihuela court at nine o’clock Friday morning with our Spanish foundation administrator Isabel to sign and seal the paperwork to allow us to get the fourteen horses out of these premises.

We and the El Refugio del Burrito people were then instructed to go to the Guardia Civil police station in Orihuela at eleven thirty. I met with my husband Rod, Hassan our stable manager and Dorothea our equine vet.

From there we were escorted to the horse dealers’ premises by six Guardia Civil officers where we were met by crews from Spanish television and Spanish press reporters along with a crowd of onlookers.”
Sue continued,” We were taken aback at the amount of interest that this case had generated. The owner of the premises was not happy that his horses were being taken from him and he and his family were guarding the entrance armed with sticks.

The Guardia Civil officers were wonderful and with great diplomacy and tact they calmed what was an explosive situation down, to allow only Hassan and Dorothea to enter and check the horse’s condition and suitability to travel. We had to wait outside and endure what was a tense atmosphere at the entrance.
Eventually after what seemed ages the permission was given to move into place the large horse box truck to take half the horses to our sanctuary in Rojales. Unfortunately the driver had exceeded his permitted driving hours so we had to hire another truck from Alicante to come and collect the remaining horses. We eventually finished work at the centre at one o’clock Saturday morning, a sixteen hour rescue which involved us also having to build an extra secure paddock at very short notice.”
The horses have now settled into their new surroundings reasonably well and will remain in the custody of Sue and Rod pending further legal procedures.

Of the fourteen horses, four are stallions which will be castrated soon, one is a gelding and the remainder are mares which will be checked by Dorothea to see if any are with foal and to determine their general health and condition.

It appears that some of the more mature mares were ridden regularly at some time by their previous owners before arriving at the dealers’ yard to await their fate.
Sue continues,” The mares are very affectionate, gentle and receptive to touch and were probably sold on because of the financial crisis affecting Spain or some other similar circumstances. They are certainly enjoying their freedom here with us at the EHCRC in a spacious open air environment.
Owners should think very carefully before selling their older redundant equines because they can be sold on and end up in undesirable places with poor conditions and no care and end there remaining days in misery, after a previous life of loving and careful attention.

One of our major tasks now is education, educating the younger generation is key to the future of animal welfare in Spain, educating and working more closely with other owners both Spanish and other nationalities to ensure that they treat the horses, donkeys and ponies in their care with love and respect.”
The EHCRC would welcome any donations or sponsorship to support the work that they are doing. If you are a bar owner or business that would like to hold a charity event to support the centre please get in touch with Sue Weeding on 652 021 980.

The EHCRC will ensure that your event receives the maximum press publicity plus coverage on their Face book and website pages prior to and after the function.
Every single cent donated or spent in the five charity shops operated by the EHCRC goes towards the upkeep and care of the horses, donkeys and ponies in their care. Large items such as furniture can be collected and delivered after purchase. Contact the charity shop hotline on 636 062 000.
Visit the centre on Sundays between 1pm and 4pm where refreshments are available in the garden café. The first horse tour starts at 2pm where you can get close to, and meet the residents and see first hand where your money has been spent.
For more details and directions to the centre just outside Rojales visit www.easyhorsecare.net

A CAPPELLA HITS CALPE

What is a cappella? Although a cappella is technically defined as singing without instrumental accompaniment, some groups use their voices to emulate instruments; others are more traditional and focus on harmonising.

A cappella styles range from gospel music, to contemporary, to barbershop quartets and choruses.
There are thousands of people across the globe enjoying the unique art form of barbershop singing, which started in the early 1900’s when men were queuing to get their hair cut at the local barbershop and harmonised together while they waited; hence the name.

If you’re looking for entertainment with a difference next week, then look no further than SABS, the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers.  SABS is part of a worldwide network of barbershop associations and is affiliated to the Barbershop Harmony Society in America, where it all began.
Delegates from Spain and the rest of Europe will be in Calpe at the SABS Convention and, although the convention itself is only open to delegates, SABS has organised a special show, ‘A Cappella Meets Dance’, for the public to enjoy.

It will take place at 8.00 pm on Wednesday 2nd April, at the Casa de Cultura in Calpe. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see two of the most talented a cappella groups in Europe. Show tickets are available at 12€ from Cath Hunter – email cath@sabs.es or call 686 773 442 to book yours now.
SABS has secured two fabulous a cappella groups to wow audiences at this event. Supported by Calpe’s own Phoenix Dance Group, The White Rosettes from the UK and Vocal Six from Sweden will strut their stuff and amaze you with their vocal talent.

The White Rosettes are 14 times UK gold medallists and current European champions for the second time.

Under the direction of Sally McLean, they aim to push the boundaries of technical excellence, musicality and performance, doing this by entering prestigious national and international competitions, performing both locally and further afield. The chorus sings a range of styles, from strict barbershop, to jazz, gospel and show classics.

Vocal Six is an award-winning male a cappella group from Sweden. Their repertoire is a mix of different styles, probably best described as pop, rock and jazz with precision and humour. Besides doing concerts and event entertainment, both in Sweden and abroad, they also give workshops for choirs.
“SABS is holding its convention in Calpe for the first time this year and we are delighted to have two such talented groups as our star guests.” commented SABS President, Gail Grainger. “We have been made so welcome by the Mayor of Calpe, César Sánchez Pérez, and Town Councillor, Carole Saunders that we want to share this wonderful talent with the people of Calpe.”

SABS is also supporting local charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS, who will be holding a raffle at the show. For more information on the charity check www.fcemaus.com
With so many of Calpe’s hotel rooms booked by delegates arriving from Spain and the rest of Europe, residents will no doubt find them bursting into song in the local bars, cafés, hotels, or even in the street. This is all part of what happens when barbershoppers get together for their conventions and Calpe is in for a real treat.

FAIRWAYZ GOLF SOCIETY

On Thursday 20th March and Friday 21st March we had our annual 2-day golf trip and one night stop-over in Benidorm.

The format for both days was individual Stableford, with prize money for 1st, 2nd, best front 9, best back 9 and nearest the pin, also prize money for overall total scores after the two days of play for 1st and 2nd. On the way out we played at Bonalba Golf, no outstanding moments that I know of and at the end of the day the scores were only separated by a few points, so the overall competition was still open for anyone to win.

However, we had to endure the night stop-over in Benidorm, which would usually have an effect on the 2nd day scoring, and it did! The problems start, when you go out with the intention of only having a few beers before returning to the hotel and getting a good nights sleep ready for the next days golf, but of course you get carried along with the banter and moving from one bar to another to watch the "turns", and before you know it, it's past the 10:30 bedtime you promised yourself.
So yes the scores suffered, badly in fact!

So, after a fragile second day of golf the winners scores for both days and the overall winners were as follows:-
Day 1.
1st Graham Butterworth - 33pts.
2nd Dave Stewart - 31pts.
Best front 9 - Lee George 16pts.
Best back 9 - Graham Philip - 16pts on c/b.
Nearest the pin - John Pedersen.
Day 2.
1st Peter Jones - 25pts c/b.
2nd Lee George - 25pts.
Best front 9 - Dave Stewart - 15pts.
Best back 9 - Tony McMillan - 13pts c/b.
Nearesty the pin - Steve Hamilton.
Overall.
1st Dave Stewart - 56pts. Prize money and "The Fred Rich Cup".
2nd equal with 54pts each - Graham Philip and Lee George.
Our thanks go to Tony Mac and Steve Hamilton for organising the trip.
Our next game is Thursday 27th March at Vistabella, 9:30 1st tee off. Please arrive 1 hour prior to 1st tee time.

NEED TO RENEW YOUR BRITISH PASSPORT? GO ONLINE

Passport applications for Britons resident overseas must now be made via the GOV.UK website
All British residents living in Spain must now make their passport applications online at www.gov.uk/overseas-passports.

The new passport process, which is part of a worldwide changeover, helps to reduce the possibility of making errors that can delay applications.

Applicants will find that the new process, which includes online payment, generates a personalised pack that must be printed, signed and sent with photographs and any additional documentation that may be required to the Passport Office in the UK - and no longer to a British Consulate or Embassy.
Once an application has been submitted, applicants will receive instructions on how to track its progress via the website.

It is important to apply in good time as a new passport will take at least four weeks from the time the completed application pack is received by the Passport Office in the UK, or six weeks if replacing a lost or stolen passport.

“Don’t leave it until the last minute to apply for your passport,” advises Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain. “You can apply up to nine months in advance and any unexpired time will be added to your new passport.”

Applicants who cannot access the online system or who experience any difficulties should contact the Passport Advice Line on +44 300 222 0000.

The Options Available to Stop Foreclosure of Your Real Estate

Foreclosure is something that no homeowner wants to face. It can mean the loss of your dream home, any equity in your home, your credit rating and most importantly, your dignity. Foreclosure is a very public process, with your name listed in the public court records and then published in your local newspaper. Even when you have put everything behind you and ready to move on with our life, the incident follows you like a shadow. It appears on your credit report for at least 7-10 years. In addition, all mortgage applications will ask about it.

Once real estate is lost to foreclosure, the owner’s credit score can drop by as much as 250-280 points. The credit score can be restored only after strenuous on-time payments done regularly over a period of three years or more. If the foreclosure is an isolated event, you may be able to restore your records in 24 months if your credit record is otherwise sound. But this usually does not happen as foreclosure comes with escalating rates that only push the individual deeper into debt.

If you have experienced a temporary setback, you may have several options available to you to stop foreclosure of your real estate.  Here are several proven strategies to avoid a foreclosure:

Don’t Panic. Face the Situation Squarely, Calmly

The prospect of being unable to make their mortgage payment paralyzes many with fear and anxiety. They start avoiding phone calls and defer paying the bills. The best way to start repairing the situation is to stop panicking and act fast.  Gather your bill statements and most importantly, call your lender to explain your situation.

Talk to Your Lender to Work out a Plan

Avoiding your lender is the last thing you should do. Contactyourlenderassoonasyourealizethatyouhave a problem. Remember, lenders do not want your house. Their business is structured to deal with such situations and that’s why they will have many options to help you throughtough financialtimes. Responding to all mail from your lender will send a clear signal to them that you are serious about resolving the issue.

Mortgage Restructuring

Mortgage modification is a practical option available to stop foreclosure. If you have experienced a permanent reduction in income and cannot afford a repayment plan, the terms of the loan may be adjusted to match your current income levels. The interest rate is lowered or the term is extended so that monthly payments become affordable.

Forbearance Agreement

Forbearance agreement is normally used if you have experienced tough financial times that’s now firmly behind you and you can resume making regular payments. It is a popular option when you can’t pay all of your past due mortgage payments at once.  Under the agreement, the lender agrees to move your pending payments to the back of the loan. This helps you stop foreclosure and also gives you a long breather to get things back on track.

Working out a New Repayment Plan

Modifying the repayment plan is one of the most preferred methods of lenders.  Here the lender agrees to let you draw level with the back payments by adding a portion of the pending amount to each current monthly payment until the account is back to normal again.

Refinancing Your Mortgage

Mortgage refinance is a way out if you have suffered a setback financially and unable to make regular mortgage payments. You can refinance your loan with your existing lender or a new lender but you must furnish proof of good credit prior to the setback, and also establish that you can now support the new mortgage payment. This is usually not a sound option unless you agree to very high interest rates. But it can save you from foreclosure and help you bounce back when earnings improve and your finances are back on track.

Filing for Bankruptcy

Filing for bankruptcy will temporarily stop the foreclosure case. You are allowed to file any time before the foreclosure auction. However, this should is usually the last and most painful way of stopping foreclosure. The move will not permanently end the foreclosure but it can buy you months or years without losing your property. This method however has a high risk of failure. This is because the reorganization arrangement typically requires the homeowner to make plan payments that are much higher than the original payments. Given the tough financial situation, that is often an uphill task.

How To Make Your Own Greenhouse

A greenhouse can be a very practical addition to your garden. It allows you to start seedlings, grow exotic plants and even produce your own food throughout the year. Furthermore, it can give an additional charm to your garden, especially if beautifully built. And the best thing about it is that you can make it on your own, of course, if you have the time, some DIY skills and the basic tools. Below are two easy to follow instructions on how to make your own greenhouse.

Making greenhouse from PVC pipes and joints

Using PVC pipes and joints is probably the easiest way to make a greenhouse that meets your specific needs and space available. But before you head to your local home improvement store, be sure to determine the size of your future greenhouse and write down the dimensions in order to be able to calculate how many pipes and joints you need to buy.
Now that you have everything you need, begin assembling your greenhouse starting at the bottom section. The shape is of course completely up to you – you can build a triangular or quadrangular greenhouse if you like but if you want to grow tomatoes or other slightly larger plants, it may be worth to consider making a quadrangular structure with a triangular roof. By making an extra effort to make a triangular roof rather than flat one, you will also increase the amount of daylight getting into the greenhouse as well as prevent rain and snow from accumulating on the roof. When you assembly all the pipes, you simply cover the structure with plastic and you're done.
Since PVC pipes are very light, you may face issues with the wind. If the wind's strong enough, it can blow your newly built greenhouse away. Rather than making it entirely from PVC pipes, it may be a good idea to make a wooden base in order to make it heavier and avoid any wind issues.

Building greenhouse from recycled windows/glass doors

If you want a larger greenhouse to give an additional appeal to your garden, grow flowers or food all year round or/and accent your home exteriors but don't want to spend several hundred dollars on pre-made structures, there is good news. You can build a greenhouse from old windows and glass doors that are thrown out by homeowners remodeling their houses. This option is of course much more challenging than making a greenhouse from PVC pipes. In addition, it may take some time to find the right windows/glass doors.
If you decide to build a greenhouse from recycled windows/glass doors, you are recommended to make a rough plan of how it should look. But don't start building it until you get all the windows/glass doors you need. If you can't find the right windows/glass doors in a reasonable amount of time, it may be a good idea to make changes to your plan in order to be able to get started with what is available.
