A cappella styles range from gospel music, to contemporary, to barbershop quartets and choruses.
There are thousands of people across the globe enjoying the unique art form of barbershop singing, which started in the early 1900’s when men were queuing to get their hair cut at the local barbershop and harmonised together while they waited; hence the name.
If you’re looking for entertainment with a difference next week, then look no further than SABS, the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers. SABS is part of a worldwide network of barbershop associations and is affiliated to the Barbershop Harmony Society in America, where it all began.
Delegates from Spain and the rest of Europe will be in Calpe at the SABS Convention and, although the convention itself is only open to delegates, SABS has organised a special show, ‘A Cappella Meets Dance’, for the public to enjoy.

SABS has secured two fabulous a cappella groups to wow audiences at this event. Supported by Calpe’s own Phoenix Dance Group, The White Rosettes from the UK and Vocal Six from Sweden will strut their stuff and amaze you with their vocal talent.
The White Rosettes are 14 times UK gold medallists and current European champions for the second time.
Under the direction of Sally McLean, they aim to push the boundaries of technical excellence, musicality and performance, doing this by entering prestigious national and international competitions, performing both locally and further afield. The chorus sings a range of styles, from strict barbershop, to jazz, gospel and show classics.
Vocal Six is an award-winning male a cappella group from Sweden. Their repertoire is a mix of different styles, probably best described as pop, rock and jazz with precision and humour. Besides doing concerts and event entertainment, both in Sweden and abroad, they also give workshops for choirs.

With so many of Calpe’s hotel rooms booked by delegates arriving from Spain and the rest of Europe, residents will no doubt find them bursting into song in the local bars, cafés, hotels, or even in the street. This is all part of what happens when barbershoppers get together for their conventions and Calpe is in for a real treat.
